Week of April 9-13 Open House Info

Thank you as always to our valued volunteers.  Many thanks to everyone for supporting the book fair.  The kids were excited about their book choices - although waiting for the orders to be filled is challenging - learning to delay gratification is not a bad thing, especially if you will get the book you really wanted and not just buy anything that is available with your cash in hand...who hasn't done that, even as an adult!

It was a challenging week weather-wise but we did fairly well.  My box of extra mittens got a real work out with the number of kids who didn't have mittens of their own so please keep sending the mitts and boots a little longer.  Feel free to blame  the boot wearing on me, our seniors especially have decided that boots are a hinderance to their tag or soccer skills and are quite whiny about the whole situation but I am insisting until those woodchips dry out...the mess of sand and dirt that comes in is awful!  We are tracking rain this month with a simple yes/no survey format and for the last 3 days we have changed our "no" to "snow"...bah humbug!

As you may have heard...some are more vocal than others about gym time...we have missed a few sessions as the gym is being used to host large events.  This past week there were badminton and volleyball tournaments and next week a house event is booked for Tuesday.  Whenever we go we make good use of our time given - frozen tag and banana tag are the big favorites, parachute, squirrels and nuts, predators and prey with hula hoops and using the coloured/numbered bean bag animals are all up there!  For some the down side of gym time is the structure, it isn't a place where kids can just run free range - we teach and stick to a code of conduct to ensure safety since there are 27 of us.  If your child is not a fan of gym time it may be because outdoor play is unstructured in the sense that each of them decides what they will do and what their activity level is whereas in the gym I program and decide for them!

This week you will be receiving an invitation to the LKS "A Day in the Life of Your Student" open house.  The event is Thursday, April 19 and Kindergarten classes are open from 6-7 pm while grades 1-8 classes are open from 6:30-7:30 pm to help you get to each class you need as well as to help keep our kindies on track with their bed times as there is school the next day.  It will look and sound different in each class depending on how that room operates and what they have decided to feature.  It is to be child driven so that YOUR CHILD and yourself interact around the room doing the "jobs" as we call them that the kids are expected to.  Having the largest classes, you can imagine that our kindie rooms will be overflowing with parents and potentially siblings so we ask that you follow your child's lead as the "tour guide" and try some of the activities yourself (that is the idea, the kids are the experts going to show YOU what to do) and be mindful of making sure to tidy as you go so that everyone has the same great experience.  The kids know it isn't a play time so we ask for your help to keep them and their siblings on track while you are in the room.  Those of you with strollers, we ask that you leave them OUTSIDE to keep the congestion down in the classroom and as you move around the school.  Many thanks!
