Week of June 8 - 12

Thank you as always to our valued volunteers. This week we wrap up the small reader-mailbag program. Your child will bring a book Tuesday and Thursday and that's it for the year! Please keep an eye open for stray books around the house, car or anywhere else. Both Ms. McGee and I would always rather have a book back late than NOT at all! It is always so rewarding to see the progress of our young readers at the end of the year. Reading every day in so many ways is the practice needed to make good readers, keep it up over the summer and WOW!

The children had such an exciting week with the caterpillars transforming into their chrysalis'! Our Butterfly Journal is just full of great comments and drawings by the kids. In case they are wondering...the last little caterpillar was in his "J" this morning and so I hung him up with the others in the tank. He will be in a chrysalis by Monday morning! The others may begin to emerge over the weekend so the children and I prepared our tank with some flowers and home-made nectar (sugar water!) before leaving Thursday. Today I added a flowering hibiscus and some gatorade - athletes AND butterflies! Who knew?! Hopefully all will be well Saturday and Sunday.

Having the PA Day without the Before and After program in the room allowed me to clean and re-organize to better suit our busy, busy classroom. I'm sure the children will come in Monday wondering what is going on but they adjust quickly and it will work better for us. We are also projected to have a fifth kindergarten class next year as those of you in JK will know from the letter your child brought home Thursday. Many resources for that class will come from teachers in the existing classrooms sorting, sharing and purging materials!

If your child is in JK this year, you received a letter from Ms. Caddel confirming your child's teacher and classroom remains the same and giving the start date as Wednesday, September 9. Although Tuesday, September 8 is the first day for the grades 1 to 8, Kindergarteners come to an Open House in their classroom for an hour only.

Senior Kindergartens as of Sept. 2015 visit from 10 - 11 AM Tuesday, September 8

Our new Junior Kindergartens as of Sept. 2015 visit from 1 - 2 PM Tuesday, September 8

Wednesday, September 9 will be the FIRST FULL day of Senior Kindergarten for your child. New JK's will begin school on Thursday or Friday of that week so that by Friday all expected students are in their classes. The new JK's will be receiving their confirmation letters in the mail over the next week or so and we welcome them to our blog!

Also sent home this week with your child was an order form for a Terry Fox t-shirt. As you know our school is one of the top 5 supporters of Terry's campaign and we celebrate our fundraising efforts in a BIG way with a whole school walk in September. Teachers and students alike wear their "Terry" shirts on this day so if you would like your child to have one, this is your chance! Money raised from the t-shirts goes towards our fundraising goal and supports a great cause. Due date for orders is June 17 but you may also come into the school over this next week between 8:30-8:45 or 3:15-3:30 to see and order the t-shirts.

I will repeat last week's Grad and Pizza Lunch on the Lawn information since it was not easy to read! Rarely do we have issues with the blogspot site but that was a doozy! I had no idea there were so many unseen characters or squiggles! between my text when I typed it and what would happen if they couldn't be read...

SK Graduation will be on Wednesday, June 24 from 2-3 pm.

It will be a regular school day until that point. The juniors will share in the ceremony as they always have, enjoying watching the class video since they are in it as well! After that, the 17 juniors will leave the class and our ceremony will continue with each senior (there are 14 graduates) stepping up to receive his or her certificate individually. Since we have more graduates at one time than ever before, I ask that you keep the number of guests to a minimum. I will be moving class furniture out of the way and bringing in chairs to accommodate you, assuming 2 per graduate. There will not be enough room for siblings to have chairs but they may sit with/on you or on the floor. Strollers will need to stay in the playground outside. Arrival and seating begins at 1:45pm, NO earlier please. Entry to the class will be from the BACK, outside door unless it is raining, so as NOT to clog up the hallway. Once the greeting, video and certificates are completed there will be time for a snack and mingling. At 3:00 we will wrap up our celebration for regular dismissal time at 3:05 as the daycare will need access to the room. The juniors will be outside, with their belongings, ready for pick up and not needing to re-enter the class at all. In the case of rain I have booked an indoor space for them to use.

Pizza Lunch on the Lawn is Thursday, June 25. The WHOLE school goes to the shale pit park for lunch/pizza. This means EVERY child needs Parent/Caregiver supervision in order to go. Your pizza was ordered in September so unless you ordered EXTRA to accommodate yourself or younger siblings you will need to BRING LUNCH with you. For this day only, ALL pizza will be given out at the start of lunch (11:20). This means ALL children need to be picked up BY AN ADULT and walked to the park. The classroom is closed over the lunch hour as usual. The Kindergarten play area is closed to children unless you are supervising them. The children MUST stay with you or a designated adult for the ENTIRE lunch hour. At the end of the lunch hour the bell will ring for re-entry as on every other day and the children will line up at the back door to be permitted in. Typically, classes stake out an area to sit so that the kids are close to each other but with the size of our class and siblings in different classes, this may be difficult! Volunteers on that day would simply be handing bundles of lunch to the parent/caregiver with each child and helping make sure there is no mess left behind. It sounds and is a bit of a logistical nightmare but it is a fun way to finish off the year!
