Week of December 8-12

Thank you as always to our valued volunteers.  A big thanks this week to our three great helpers on Wednesday's trip - Kelly, Patricia and Lindsay - we appreciated your time and company.
Another big thanks goes to our mailbag book changers who have done a super job keeping the books moving and helping us locate missing books.  At this point we are near the end of the rotation for this set which makes it especially difficult to give the children new books when some don't come back.  PLEASE look for any and all small readers you may have at home and send them in.  We will not start a new set until after the holiday break so this week you may get a duplicate and next week we won't be sending any HOME just collecting them all back in.  Going forward we will NOT collect Poetry books until Tuesdays (a book change day) to avoid having your mailbag in the class and readers still at home.  Tuesday and Thursday will remain new book days and Poetry books can be sent Tuesdays as well. Hopefully this will help!

The LKS Holiday Food Drive began this week.  We have a box outside our classroom doorway for any donations and you can send non-perishable items in with your child.  Peanut free donations only please and thank you so much for your contributions, it's a wonderful teaching opportunity for the children to see in action!

We have approximately 15 high frequency words on our board in the class, words the children see and read each day that can't necessarily be sounded out and make up a large percentage of the words in young reader material.  We will continue to introduce, use and add words to our collection over the year.  For those of you with children ready to begin their own collection of words - having a box of words they can refer to for help when writing is a great strategy and easier than a dictionary for this age group - PROVIDED the child is familiar with and comfortable using the words.  There are many online resource sites ( just google kindergarten sight words!) that are helpful and free but here are some I've used -
www.kidzone.ws/dolch/kindergarten  They are free and printable!
www.sightwordgame.com   They have word lists and online sight word concentration that has audio for the kids as they play the game!
www.thesmilingteacher.com  They have games and printables.

If your child is not there yet, it will come!  Offering different ways or reasons to read is a powerful lure and more valuable practice so make it fun and enjoy!

Silly Sweater (Christmas or Holiday or otherwise!) Day is Wednesday.  Donations for the Free The Children Foundation will be collected from all classes - a suggested donation was $1 from each child sharing their "silly sweater" but of course participation is voluntary for ANY of these Spirit Days.

Friday will be Pizza Lunch and our December Sharing Assembly to celebrate the character traits of Kindness and Caring.  Certificates will be given to Sara, Amelia and Ayden for the great job they do in the classroom with their peers and adults.  Congratulations on a wonderful job and being great class family members!

This week:
Monday - Lib/IT
Tuesday - Reading Buddies
Wednesday - Silly Sweater Day, Mystery Reader PM
Thursday - Music, Lib/IT
Friday - Sharing Assembly 9:00, Mystery Reader AM, Pizza Lunch

Classroom teachers have been told there is $200 available to each class for supplies as a direct result of parent donations, thank you, thank you!  This is the "Classroom Fund" donation that was collected by your Parent Council at the beginning of the year.  The funds are tallied and shared across the school to all grades and programs French, Music, Gym etc. I purchased several games, math and reading supplies with last year's money and will do the same this year.  If you know a Parent Council member tell them thanks or if you feel so inclined, drop them a thank you note, I usually do! The PC at Lambton provides money for field trip bus money, a "Scientist in the School" visit and an artist in the classroom visit with parent funds so again - thank you, thank you!  Your children are well taken care of!

Have a great week, Ms. I.
