Week of September 8 - 12

Thank you all for a great first few days!
It is very busy in our room as we get to know one another and learn or remember the routines of kindergarten.  Your support and encouragement with your child makes this go smoothly. Things we are working on right now...attentive listening and following instructions.  Just like home runs smoothly when everyone listens, so does our classroom.  Acknowledge when your child listens well so that they feel the skill at work and praise praise praise your child for following instructions, especially the first time given!  We will continue to work on these skills throughout the kindergarten years and your child's school career.  These are life skills for work and home at any age...qualities that make us good friends, good spouses and good managers or employees.

Thanks go out to all those who volunteered a fan for our class or brought one in!  Hopefully this week will be a little more reasonable!  The children enjoyed a much appreciated freezie Friday as well, generously given to the class to help cool off!  Thanks for your kindness.

This week I will be modelling the "Mystery Bag" component of our program for the children.  Once we have collected all of the email/contact information from each family our grade parents will be able to make a class Leader calendar.  Your child will be the Leader once every 31 school days ( if we  continue to have 31 children in our class) and they will have a turn to share an item (1) with their classmates on their leader day.  These items are not toys and are a secret we try to guess based on 3 clues your child gives us!  For those of you who have not yet returned forms to school yet, we are looking for:  class contact consent form from EVERYONE
medical form from ALL JK families and anyone NEW to LKS
required parent signatures form from EVERYONE
                     student information form for Ms.I.
Please return these as soon as possible.  Thanks!

LUNCH
It has quickly become apparent that most children are staying for lunch each day.  This has resulted in a change to the lunch plan.  Those children staying now go outside for the first 30 minutes of their lunch hour, supervised by Lunchtime supervisors, and are brought into the lunchroom to eat for the last portion of the lunch hour - once again supervised by the Lunchtime supervisors (4) as the teachers and ECE staff are also eating during this time.  This now means that the kindergarten playground area needs to be emptied quickly at 11:20 so that the lunch supervisors can ensure everyone is safe.  On inclement weather days the children will be supervised the entire time in the lunch room.  Please BE SURE your child knows they are staying for lunch to avoid upset and confusion.  Packing the lunch together is a great way of making sure they know they are staying as well as making sure they know what is lunch food and what is a snack.  PLEASE DO NOT put your child's snacks inside their lunch bag as it makes it very difficult for your child to get to them and hard for us to know what is what!  Snacks can be inside the backpack but don't need to be in the lunch bag.  Snack is eaten in our own class when your child feels hungry - once during the morning and another during the afternoon.  At this time of the year I am reminding the children regularly to eat their snacks and encouraging them to finish any lunch they may not have eaten over the course of the afternoon.  Leftovers ARE SENT HOME so you can see how much and what your child has eaten.

3:05 DISMISSAL
Thank you for observing the new routine and exiting the kindergarten yard as quickly as you can after school is finished.  The playground is closed for daycare use after school.

CURRICULUM NIGHT
Tuesday will be LKS Curriculum Night.  We begin promptly at 5:30 in the gym (stage side) and end at 6:00 to allow the next group use of the space.  At 6:00 we will come to the class so you may look at and sign up for any volunteer activities you are able/would like to.  Our class parents/grade parents will be available for you to meet and answer questions you may have.  At 6:30 the kindergarten portion of the evening is over and we close up the classroom.  Teachers head back to the gym for whole staff introductions and Ms. Caddel's welcome speech.  Thank you in advance for attending and offering your time!

OUTDOOR TIME
We have two outdoor play sessions built into our day PLUS lunch time play if your child is staying.  Please be mindful of the weather when dressing your child to ensure they are comfortable during these times.  Water bottles are helpful and can be refilled at our class fountain.  Labelling your child's belongings will reduce lost items as there are a lot of similar or same items, lunch bags included!
