Week of Sept. 22 -26

What a busy week!  We continue to work on routines in the class, lining up, tidying up, listening and working quietly.  Both Junior and Senior K's are learning to complete assigned tasks over their school day as well as independently choose activities and regulate their behaviour to fit the situation or expectations of the class.  We completed two more fire drills and won't have more now until the spring.

On Friday, your child brought home his/her Poetry and Song book with two new poems inside.  Please read them over with your child this weekend - and the old ones! - and return the yellow poetry book on Monday.  For non-readers, pointing at the words and saying them via memory is the beginning of reading behaviour.  Encourage your child to look at the words and begin making one to one connections.  Begin with common "sight words" such as is, it, the or words your child may pick out because they begin with the same letter as their name etc etc.  Reading is a combination of many strategies and skills that come together with your child's attention span.  It can't be forced but it can be encouraged and nourished so take the hint from your child when they have had enough - reading is also for pleasure and fun, stressing over it too early can cause a negative association!  These are poems and songs that we read and do each day and will continue to practise over the year.  They have relevance and meaning to your child so as your child's skill and attention expands you should see a change in their reading behaviours and confidence with the poetry book.

The school Terry Fox walk will take place on Wednesday, September 24 (September 25 if there's rain!) at approximately 12:45.  Adults volunteering with us will be able to enter with the children after the lunch bell.  We will take attendance in the class then go to the gym.  There is a short video and speeches after which we head out with the other kindergarten classes and walk around the school.  After completing our walk we will head back in to the class for our regular afternoon activities and you are free to go.    Thank you for volunteering!

Thank you to those who have returned pizza forms and the money due.  The first pizza lunch is this Friday, Septemeber 26.  The children will be loosely following the regular lunch routine by playing outside for a portion of the lunch hour and eating in the lunchroom.  Thank you to those volunteering to help supervise on that day!

Friday will also be our first Sharing Assembly.  Assembly begins after announcements (approximately 9:00) in the gym.  Please consider WALKING to school if you are planning to attend as the extra cars will definitely add congestion to the parking lot as well as streets around the school.  This month we celebrate Lexi, Michael and Tommy for their wonderful show of respect in the classroom and around the schoolyard.  Well done!  The children line up and enter the class the same as usual, parents enter by the main school doors and go directly to the gym.  After the assembly we will head back to our class and you may leave.  We thank you for your time!

Upcoming...Picture Day for us has been designated as Tuesday, September 30 at 9:20.  Your child brought home an information sheet on Friday reminding you of this time and some other helpful hints for picture day success.  It is helpful to let your child know that it is OK to smile at the photographer even though they are STRANGERS! and that MS.I. and Miss Nisker are there, they are very safe and will go back to the class as soon as all the photos are taken.  "Making strange" on picture day is quite common even at the kindergarten age and can be disappointing when you get the photo and are not pleased so reassuring your child before photo day, building confidence, can be helpful.
