Week of November 18 - 22

Good grief where are the days going and how is the Santa Claus parade this weekend ...!!

That aside, thanks as always to our volunteers.  We run like a well oiled machine most days!
Thanks to those who were able to make it out for an interview.  The next reporting period is February and this time JK's will receive a report.  Thanks also for the egg cartons that are coming in, please keep sending them!

Coming next week will be an author visit with Ted Staunton, a Canadian author of children's picture books (Puddleman was always a favorite of my boys) as well as chapter books at various reading levels.  The "Morgan" series is one to look forward to as your child enters the world of chapter books!

Keep working on those dressing/zipper skills at home please.  While I can help the children, the idea is that they are as independent as possible.  It takes quite a while to get us all ready for outdoor play right now and we don't have boots or snowpants yet...  Little fingers need exercise just as little bodies do so cutting, colouring, puzzles, lego, playdough - all things that encourage the use of a pincer grip - are perfect and necessary to master these small, precise skills we are asking the children to have.  Practise is a huge component of that.  Also, if your child's coat is hard for you to do - it probably isn't working for them either.  (Tricky zippers can be helped by adding a keyring loop so that your child has a bigger/easier object to pull up on.)

We begin the Jolly Phonics sound program this week - learning the letter sounds associated with our alphabet so that we can have a strategy to sound out words as we learn to read.  We typically can do two to three sound lessons a week, depending on our classroom schedule.  The first group of sounds are s-a-t-i-p-n not abc as you may expect; simply because after three lessons you can make a word! And think of lots of rhyming words...and away we go, the power of letters to make words becomes a little clearer!  The children will keep a book of their sound work that will come home from time to time with small tasks to do.

The November Sharing Assembly is Monday, November 25 to celebrate the character trait of empathy or putting yourself in someone else's shoes.  This is a tough one for the little guys who can be quite egocentric but we're getting it. Talking about things and asking your child in a variety of situations "how would you feel" or "how do you think they felt" helps.  We will recognize Annabelle and William in the AM and Justin in the PM for  demonstrating empathy in the classroom.

This week:
Monday - Mystery Readers 10:55 and 2:45
Tuesday - PM Computers
Wednesday - AM Library

Have a great week!
