Thank you to those who were able to help out on our Terry Fox walk and/or made it to our first Sharing Assembly! Congratulations again to our certificate recipients Henry, Marley and Daniel. Next month's character trait will be responsibility; celebrated at the Sharing Assembly on Friday, October 27.
This week we begin the "Borrow a Book" and "Mystery Reader" programs in our class.
Borrow a Book entails a small reader coming home in your child's mailbag Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These books will be at varying levels for your child meaning you can use them for different purposes. A book just right, or very close to your child's reading level is one they can read aloud to you. A book below their level means they can work on fluency and expression when reading aloud as they aren't focussing on decoding the words. Books above their level can be read to them then read with them as you reinforce one to one word correspondence; having them track the words with their finger as you go. Talk about using picture clues and sound clues as you go. Build confidence and a love of reading by making this a positive and warm experience. Reminder though, when your child doesn't return a reader - a new one will not be sent and/or if your child doesn't have their mailbag a book will not be sent. Have fun!
Mystery Readers are surprise readers who are family members. AM Mystery Readers come 10:55-11:15 on Day 2 and PM come 2:45-3:00 on Day 2. Mystery Readers need to check in at the office (sign in as a visitor and get a badge) then the office will call us so we can send two students to pick you up. Please do not come to the class!
Both of these programs rely on volunteers so Thank You in advance!
Also this week, Joanna Lee will begin a co-op student placement with the afternoon class. Joanna is a grade 11 student from ECI who attended LKS herself! Miss Lee will be with us until June, two to three afternoons a week, depending on her schedule. Introduce yourself and welcome her when you see her!
Crazy Hair Day was announced on Friday as a result of raising $10 000 to date for Terry Fox. These are known as "Spirit Days" and there will be a variety of them over the year. You and your child may choose to participate as much or as little as you wish! Any and all participation is voluntary and at your own or your child's comfort level.
LKS movie night and October Scholastic orders were sent home Friday. Please be aware of the due dates on them. If you haven't already, please return your updated student information forms also.
Your new October snack/leader and volunteer calendars were sent electronically and on paper for the AM. Please be sure to note your child's special day for snack and mystery bag. If you will be absent please trade days with someone else to keep the class covered and/or let your grade parent/myself know if you have any problems.
