Week of September 16-20 Certificate Names

Thank you to those who came out for Curriculum Night and/or were able to sign up for some of our volunteer spots.  It's wonderful to have so much support for the class and enables us to run as smoothly as possible, thank you!

Should you find yourself committed to a spot you are unable to fulfill please try to switch off with someone else or email your grade parents so they can help fill the space and give me the "heads up" that we are missing someone.  The grade parents are working hard to put together your class parent contact list from the email info you have given and the volunteer/snack/leader calendars for October. While they send you an email copy, I usually send a paper copy as well.  Coming soon!

The children will be bringing home a September calendar this week - one they have created.  We ask you to find a place to display it so that each month they can follow along with the days, events etc.  Calendars offer a chance to learn the days, numbers, time, months, practise your name etc etc and will be an invaluable part of your child's schooling - having their own agendas begins in grade 1!

Our library and computer lab continue to come along...Ms McGee is operating out of room 176 right next door for now and both classes have had a chance to meet her! Once we are able to begin visiting the library and borrowing books you will need to pay attention to our weekly schedule on the blog or your 2013-2014 LKS 5 Day Calendar (printable from Ms Caddel's blog or the TDSB site) to be sure books come BACK on the next library day.  PM class will be every Day 1 and AM class will be every Day 4.  More to come on that!

Reading Buddies is an older class visiting/buddying up with a younger class for reading and fun.  Our morning class will be buddies with Mr. Littlejohn's grade 4 class for the year and our afternoon will be buddies with Ms.Caligiuri's grade 5 class.  The morning buddies have met already, stay tuned for afternoon news!

Photo reminder notes came from the office this week and our photo day has been assigned as Tuesday, September 24 for BOTH classes.  If you are away there will be a retake day however class photos cannot be redone.

Our first Scholastic order has arrived, thanks to those who ordered.  Watch for a new one at the beginning of each month.  Orders are typically in my hands 3-5 days after being placed and I send them home with the children on the next available school day.

Some of you have asked what you can work on at home - reading and printing your name are absolute YES work but also numbers, letters and general knowledge that comes from talking to your child, visiting places, exposing them to events, people etc etc are MUSTS! Have fun out there and do the paper tasks in the quieter moments.  Your curriculum night package has suggestions you may find helpful.

***Our first Sharing Assembly will be next Friday, September 27, 9:00am and 12:35pm, in the lunch room.  We will be sharing a fun poem with you and also awarding certificates for the character trait of "respect".  Each child will receive a certificate at some point over the year based on their strongest character trait displayed in class.  We ask you to NOT tell your child when they have won but to enjoy the surprise moment when they hear their name called.  You are welcome to attend as many sharing assemblies as you are able to and of course bring cameras and/or other family members.  Sharing Assemblies and certificates are given from JK to grade 8 at LKS as these character traits are an important part of your child's development.  We ask you to discuss them at home, in context, and help your child recognize when they are or are not demonstrating them by what they are saying and doing.  Certificates this month will recognize Marley and Henry in the AM and Daniel in the PM for showing respect.  These students have done a super job of showing respect in the classroom - respect for themselves, belongings and others by caring for things well, listening and working well in the class.  Congratulations!
