Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful March Break week in whatever way makes it wonderful for you and your family! I had a terrible bout of laryngitis and sinusitis for the better part of the week and was extremely grateful for the chance to rest and recover. Not the most exciting week but chicken soup, afternoons with a book and cuddly dogs are nothing to complain about! I look forward to seeing everyone Monday.
Thanks as always to our great volunteers! The book bag and Mystery Readers programs usually run like clockwork; however if you, as the volunteer on our schedule, ever run into a snag and can let me know - either through another parent or calling the office (416-394-7890) I will do my best to cover the spot rather than not having new books or a reader that day.
Our trip to the Young People's Theatre to see "The Cat Came Back" was enjoyed by the children in both classes. Thanks to those parents who joined us for the morning or afternoon as the case may be. It's always nice to see the children in an environment other than the classroom!
Scholastic orders came just in time (those submitted on time) to get home for the break! My own boys grew up on scholastic books - so reasonable and so much fun to anticipate their arrival - they make up a great number of the books I have in the class for your children to now enjoy! Also, with every order submitted we are able to earn class dollars to buy even more books or resources for the children. If you aren't familiar with Scholastic Books you can visit their website and check them out and be sure to look for the April order form coming home with your April calendars! Building your child's sight word vocabulary (words they no longer need to sound out or can't sound out due to irregular spelling patterns) is essential to making a successful reader and having access to many books for lots of practice can get expensive so using the library - public and LKS - as well as a service like Scholastic can be a great help. I always recommend swapping books among families too as an added resource and if you truly are "finished" with certain books donating them to classrooms, hospital ward playrooms, or an organization such as The Children's Book Bank which provides free books to low income neighborhoods is a lovely idea and clears the way for new books coming in! You can check our the children's book bank at www.childrensbookbank.com
Our Sharing Assembly this month will focus on the character trait of honesty and take place on Friday this coming week - 9:00 and 12:35 as usual. Certificate recipients this month will be Oliver and Laiken in the morning class and Noah in the afternoon class. These students independently display honesty in their dealings with teachers and peers each day and value the trait of honesty when choosing peers to spend time with. Congratulations!
Please remember to return your child's SHOES to the classroom if they went home for the break and continue dressing for outdoor play on a daily basis. We do make an effort to get out each day and wearing boots for outdoors then changing to indoor shoes helps keep our floors and carpets clean!
