Week of Feb. 6 - 10 Trip forms and 100 collections due!

Thank you as always to our valued volunteers!  This is a very busy month in class, thanks to our grade parents for getting everything on the calendar for you!  If you send birthday or Valentine treats for class please remember we have 27 kids now and we try to be as nut free as possible.

Both trip forms and 100 Day collections are due this week!

The 100 Day collections should come in on Monday with your child, in the baggie provided.  The idea behind the baggie is to not only contain the project...but to give the kids the idea of what different things may look like even though the amount (100) and container (the baggie) are the same.  Young children have difficulty with the idea of amount vs size or space ... it must be more if it takes up more space ...  so we work on this concept!  Each day of the week we will draw a few baggies from the bin for the children to talk to us about.  I will model this on Monday but basically we want to know why they picked their particular items, how they grouped or counted their items and what they would REALLY like to have 100 of! You can find this out by reading the dialogue bubbles on our door and answers ranged from bracelets to ponies, puppies, kittens, lollipops and snuggles! Very cute!

We have been looking at measurement - measuring tools, units and comparisons such as taller, heavier, longer etc.  We look at both standard and non- standard units and discuss the benefits of both.  The children made a "meter stick" from paper Friday, ten pieces of 10 cm long paper to get 100 cm or 1 meter of foldable measuring tape to use around the house! Have fun!

Trip forms and payments are due in this Wednesday, Feb. 8. for the Jack Grunsky show at the Queensway Cathedral on March 1.  Also, Wednesday will be the draw day for our 2 volunteers.  I will draw a few "back up" names in the event of illness or emergency, over my years we have needed
these only a few times but it doesn't hurt to be ready!  So far, I have only about half the forms back.
As far as trips go, this has to be one of the closest, easiest, low risk trips.  We eat and washroom first so that we carry nothing, need only ride the bus a few kilometers, then get off, see a show and come back!  We will have 4 adults for the 27 children, mainly to supervise bus behaviour and assist in supervising inside the show.  We will not take food or money and do not need to be separate from the large group for anything other than further washroom visits.  Nothing to it!  Please be sure to send forms in and do your online payment by Wednesday - especially if you are volunteering!  Thanks!

Last week we had fun with Groundhog Day and the folklore around it.  We experimented with flashlights and a shadow box, made groundhogs and played with our own shadows in the brief sunbursts we had over the week. Woohoo! We will make a Valentine loot bag this week so if you wish to send your Valentines ahead of Valentine's Day, your child will be able to "mail" them into their friend's bags beginning this week.  You need only have them address their cards "from ______" to make it easier for them.

An LKS QSP school fundraising information package was sent with every student on Friday.  The whole school will be participating in a cookie dough/magazine drive to raise funds for all kinds of activities and materials around the school. The kids had an assembly to kick it off on Friday and then info was sent home. If you are interested, everything you need to know is in the bag sent. All orders will be filled and shipped to the school first (cookie dough).  Participation is completely voluntary.

This week looks like:
Monday - 100 Day collections due in, Day 5 LIB/IT AM
Tuesday - Mailbags, Music AM
Wednesday - Mystery Reader AM
Thursday - LIB/IT PM
Friday - Mailbags, Reading Buddies, Mystery Reader PM
Have a great week!
Ms. I.
