Thank you as always to our valued volunteers!
Your mailbag book changers swap books to get your child a new selection for home reading. Remember, they cannot send a new book unless the old one AND the mailbag are returned. A few small readers came back in the green library bags and were missed in the change process. You can tell the LKS library books from the LKS readers in a few ways -the readers have a sticker on the front with a letter or number on it, library books do not. Also, the library books will have a long TDSB bar code on them which the readers do not. Thanks for watching out!
Our first Mystery Reader volunteer was awesome and the kids have the idea now. Remember! Your visit is a secret so if they are asking when it will be your turn - tell them it's a mystery! We look forward to seeing many of you over the year.
This week we worked very hard to get not only our daily jobs done, but our special Thanksgiving things! There was MUCH cutting, pasting, writing and thinking involved! Your children really are appreciative and thankful for all you do and what they have - just read the words on those candles! There were very few "things" labelled, mostly experiences like going to movies, biking, skating etc. and many, many who just melted my heart by saying hugs, kisses and I love you's were what they were thankful (we use what makes you happy, what do you love - to explain the idea of thankful) for! Amazing!
From time to time the LKS Student Council (elected senior students with teacher guides) will call for "spirit days" - usually a specific dress up idea is involved to show your support or enthusiasm for a particular event. Our first of the year will be WEDNESDAY to support our awesome Blue Jays in their playoff run. The kids are excited about sports, teams and playoffs in general as most have started to have those experiences for themselves or their siblings - check out the banner they made on
our back door - GO Blue Jays GO! Students have been asked to wear their Blue Jays gear (whatever you have/borrow but never go out and buy!) or simply BLUE and WHITE clothes on Wednesday. Participation is always optional and you can chose the level of participation you are comfortable with. Wednesday morning you will see a great variety in the playground but the idea is to have fun with it, be part of a group/team celebrating something and for our youngest students to begin to recognize that there are bigger ideas than themselves and their family world. A heads up also, if they Jays continue to win and move on there may be another Jay day!
Several times over the year Ms. McGee, our librarian, will host a Book Fair in the LKS library. The students get ONE class visit to browse and purchase books but you or a caregiver may go with them if you wish to - before school, at the beginning of lunch or after school. Book Fair hours are from 8:30-11:30 and then 12:30-3:30, NOT over the lunch hour. There will be books at many price points so if your child is buying you can send as little as $5. PLEASE send any money in a ziploc bag WITH your child's name on it. As you can imagine, mixups are very easy when all the $5/$10 look
the same! We do our best to get any change BACK in the same bag and home to you!
**Please note that because of the Book Fair, we will NOT be swapping library books this week. The "orange" sticker group will turn in their old books but NOT bring a new one until their next visit. BOTH groups are visiting to shop on Wednesday this week.
The annual LKS Food Drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank begins next week, it runs October 16-31. Last year we raised over 2000 pounds of food!! If you are able to contribute something your child may bring it in to class, we have a designated box, and students from the social awareness club "The Seeds of Hope" will pick it up from us. Please remember that because we are a school collecting, we CANNOT accept peanut butter - there are students in the building with life threatening allergies. Follow the same guidelines we use for class food - no nuts please!
HALLOWEEN is quickly approaching and as you are getting your child's costume organized please keep in mind that there should be NO WEAPONS at school. If the costume comes with one, it
simply DOES NOT come to school. Think about ease for your child - too many pieces is very difficult for them to keep track of and getting it ON and OFF easily is a MUST for the washroom!
This week looks like:
Monday - Thanksgiving
Tuesday - Mailbags, PM Mystery Reader
Wednesday - Blue Jays/Blue &White Day, Book Fair visit - whole class
Thursday - Music AM
Friday - Mailbags, Mystery Reader AM
Wishing you a wonderful long weekend with people you love!
Cheers, Ms.I.
