Week of February 25 - March 1

Thank you again to our volunteers.  We have had some great surprises recently when the Mystery Reader turns out to be an older sibling!  This is a confidence builder for the older kids and wonderful role modelling for the younger ones if it can be worked out.

Congratulations again to our certificate recipients at the Sharing Assembly.  Our next assembly will focus on honesty and take place Friday, March 22 at 9 and 12:35.

Thanks to those who made it out to Open House.  We are very lucky here at Lambton to see most parents on a regular basis for those little conversations that "keep you in the loop"; for those we see less frequently that is the purpose behind a classroom blog - a quick glance into the child's classroom world to "keep you in the loop."

Borrow a book sets were changed last week so your child should have a month of new little readers coming home!  Remember these books are bagged as sets and won't be specific to your child's reading level every day - some will be better that others - but they are ALWAYS a valuable read.  Easier books are the ones to practice good expression and fluency with as your child doesn't have to worry about decoding the words.  Harder books are the ones to learn strategies with - how to "chunk" words etc where expression will be more stilted as your child decodes word by word.  REREADING on the second day they have the book is great for confidence - which is what we are building - it's o.k. that they are "remembering" the words not reading them!  Again, this is your opportunity to encourage them to look closely at words without having to decode them.  Use the library, public or LKS, to supplement these books if you wish or even join an online site where you can download or print books at a variety of reading levels to provide more opportunities to read.  Read everything everywhere - billboards, flyers, cereal boxes - anything and everything!

This week we have and Author Visit arranged by Ms. McGee.  Natalie Vachon will tell stories to the kindergartens on Wednesday.  You can find out a bit more about this Toronto native on her website!  Remember to ask what your child's favourite story was!

We have managed to keep up with our sound work over these short or "party" weeks so this week we look at the sound "Ll" and listen for it.  When you practice with your child help them not to OVER enunciate the sound by tacking on an UH sound before such as UHL this habit makes it difficult for your child to decode words as the sounds they are saying don't actually sound like the desired word!  For instance c-a-t is hard to hear when it's uh-c-uh-a-uh-t...too confusing especially as the words get longer!

The February Scholastic book order will come home on Monday for those who ordered books this month.  The March order form will come home on Friday, March 1 with a due date of Monday, March 4 in the hopes that we can get the order in before the break but there are no guarantees on this.

Trip day is quickly approaching, be sure to make any alternate travel/pick up/drop off arrangements you need to around the new times.  Again -
AM students will arrive LATE, over the lunch hour so no bus will be available to take them home.  We estimate around 12:15 and parents, caregivers etc should wait outside their child's classroom door as we will exit there just like every other day.  Remember there will be afternoon children and parents getting ready to come to school also!

PM students will need to arrive early meaning they cannot take the regular school bus in or walk with friends or siblings at the regular lunch hour time.  They will be back to school in order to be dismissed from our door at the usual time 3:05.

Friday has been declared LKS School Colours Day by our student council.  The students are asked to wear something blue and yellow/gold as those are our colours.  A gym shirt if they have/can borrow one from a sibling is a great solution!

In math we continue our addition and subtraction work by taking away numbers in a variety of positions in the number sentences.  For example 2 + 2 = _  is the usual set up but children who really understand number values and relationships need practice with questions such as 2 + _ = 4 and
also _ - 2 = 2 !  Try them at home with your child on paper or on games on your devices.

Here's our week:
Monday - PM Library
Tuesday - AM Library
Wednesday -Author Visits both AM and PM classes
Thursday - Mystery Readers 10:55 and 2:45
Friday - AM computers, PM Reading Buddies, LKS Colours Day!
 Have a good week,
                               Ms. I.
