Week of December 10 - 14

Thanks as always to our weekly volunteers!  Everything moves over by one day this week, as a result of Friday"s PA Day, check your calendars for library and volunteer schedules.

Stonegate baskets will be picked up Monday and delivered by our student council.  Ours look full and wonderful!  I'm sure our receiving families will be overwhelmed by our generosity, thank you for all of the wonderful donations!

Ms. Walker's grade 5 class will be collecting tinned/boxed/non-perishable food donations from Dec. 10 - 19 in conjunction with the Second Harvest Food drive.  As much as it is another donation request, this one can easily be fulfilled by just bringing something with you to the Sharing Assembly and dropping it in the bins by the office.  Students may also bring donations of course!  Thank you in advance for our LKS spirit of generosity.

Sharing Assemblies will be next Monday, December 17 at 9:00 and 12:35.  The celebrated character trait this month is Kindness and Caring and our certificate recipients will be Emily F. and Kaden in the morning and Lucy in the afternoon class.  Each of these students demonstrates these qualities on a daily basis in all their dealings with peers and general classroom behaviour.  Congratulations!  Students may wear antlers or Santa hats if they wish for our performance.

Special guest this week will be Vanessa Thomson to do some music with the AM class.  When you see her, give her your thanks and if there is a talent of interest you have that you think our students would enjoy let me know!

Last week we did the C/K sound and this week will be E.  The vowels are much more difficult to discern in words so don't despair if your child doesn't always hear the sounds correctly.  As adults we can help the children better recognize and differentiate between the sounds by practising with them and reminding them how the mouth works to form the sound - in class we think about the shape of our mouth, where the tongue might be, how much air is needed (can you feel the air?)  and where the sound is coming from.

Our math strand right now is sorting and graphing - focusing on making groups using similarities identified by "a rule"  found in a question to generate data - for example the question "How did you get to school?" might generate data such as 12 walked, 2 bus, 6 car which we can then use to make a graph or picture representation of our data.  All math strands are repeated through the grades, offering children an opportunity to continue skill building and practising as their understanding develops.  Practising at home is always a good idea!  Using sites such as IXL, the Khan Academy or any other grade/age appropriate site is great!

Holiday party/Craft day will be Tuesday, December 18 for both AM and PM.  We will enjoy making our extra crafts and having special treats for the holiday season.  There will be no computers for the AM class that day.  Crafts will be properly dried, bagged and sent home at the end of the week.
