Week of January 22-26

Thank you as always to our valued volunteers.  This week is Sharing Assembly on Friday and we celebrate the character trait of teamwork.  Ms. K. And I have been watching the class for standouts in this area and while everyone will get a certificate at some point over the year and NOT getting the certificate doesn't necessarily mean your child doesn't display that character trait, we do try to match the kids with traits that they clearly exhibit.  This month we recognize Kael, Riley and Jamie for being team players - they will happily work with anyone and everyone and don't mind helping out to reach an end goal.  Well done!

Our PA Day this past Friday was for report cards or as we now call them in kindergarten a "communication of learning". They will come home with ALL students on February 12 and that week will be for any interviews.  Traditionally interviews this term are for our "at risk" students, or where changes in behaviour or achievement either positively or negatively have been identified.  That being said, of course ANY parent can request an interview and we will accomodate you.  I am going to wait for Ms. Paldon's return to set my schedule so that she is not inconvenienced.  You may not be aware of it but our ECE's are not salaried employees, while working for the TDSB they do enjoy greater benefits and time off than other ECE's  but they are paid hourly for a six and a half hour day not the much longer hours that come with interviewing!  Keep an eye on your inbox as you will be given notice in your parent council email when the system is accessible to you for booking.

More Upcoming...
The 100th day of school is a big deal in Kindergarten and grade one so we will be asking each child to bring a collection of 100 for a show and share.  This is a project you can do in any number of ways
and can look completely different for each child.  I suggest you use your child's own interests to guide you toward what you might want to use as your "100" things and then group your items so that
your child has practised counting (2's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 25's, 50's) by groups - always faster than by 1's!
Some suggestions are stickers, hockey cards, lego, cars, candy, stamps...your imagination is the limit AND the collection needs to fit inside the medium sized ziploc bag that I will send home with your child the week before.  More details to come as we get closer but you can also google it for ideas!

Valentine's Day will be our next craft party but you might want to start having your child sign their name on cards or treats if you will be sending them to school.  Cards and treats need ONLY HAVE YOUR CHILD'S NAME on them for passing out.  As much as possible we have the kids put their treat into their friends' loot bags and if they can't read the names -either the ones they themselves wrote or the ones their friends wrote on the loot bag this is impossible.  A gentle reminder, as with anything that comes to school for sharing please ensure items are NUT FREE.  You never know, a sibling or parent where a loot bag ends up can have allergies even if no one in our class does so safety comes first.

Also coming in February...
Chinese New Year celebrations begin on Friday, February 16 and the kids love learning about the
stories and traditions associated.
NEW Kindergarten registration ( children coming new to JK in September or SK' s coming NEW to LKS in September) will pre-register in February, have a class visit in June and begin school with us in September 2018.  My present JK's become my next year's SK's and NO registration is necessary.  If you have friends or neighbors with kindergarten aged children please pass it on as the more pre-registrations we have the less likely we are to have to move kids and the more balanced our classes are when we can evenly spread the incoming kids between us.  Every little bit helps!

This week looks like:
Monday - Day 5 LIB/IT yellow AM, Mystery Reader PM
Tuesday - Mailbags
Wednesday - Music, Mystery Reader AM, Gym PM
Thursday - Reading Buddies AM
Friday - Mailbags, Sharing Assembly 9:00, Pizza Lunch, Day 4 LIB/IT orange, Gym PM
Have a great week!
Ms. I.
